General information about Pilgrim Library.

Laptop Loaner Program

The Defiance College Pilgrim Library is pleased to offer a laptop computer checkout service to DC students supported by COVID-19 Stimulus funds.  Laptops are available for checkout at the Library’s Information/Circulation Desk.

They may be used for study, work, and research.

The DC library has ten laptop computers and three MacBooks for three-day loans.

LIMITS & AVAILABILITY

  1. The laptop computers can only be checked out by currently enrolled DC full-time students.
  2. Laptops will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
  3. An eligible student is allowed to borrow one laptop at a time.
  4. Printing is not available from laptops.  Students may use the Library Computer Lab to print.
  5. Audio or video files must be played with headphones while in the library.

CHECKOUT PROCEDURE

  1. A student borrowing a laptop must read and agree to abide by the Library Laptop Checkout Policy and the DC PC Use Policy.
  2. A student borrowing a laptop must present a valid DC ID card.  
  3.  A student must sign the Laptop Checkout Agreement before taking a laptop away from the circulation desk.
  4. At checkout, the laptop will be inspected by a circulation staff member (or a student worker) to ensure it is intact and functioning correctly.
  5. Students are cautioned to save their files in their flash or jump drives, GoogleDocs, or send them via an email attachment.  All files will be erased after the computer is shut down.
  6. The laptop will be checked out to the student's Library account.

LOAN PERIOD & RENEWALS

  1. The checkout period is for three days from check out time on day one.  Be sure to monitor Pilgrim Library hours for return time. 
  2. The student must return the laptop and accessories to the circulation desk at the end of the loan period to renew the checkout (if others are not waiting for one).
  3. The maximum number of consecutive check out times is three.
  4. In the event of a long-term request for usage, please see the Library Director. 

CHECK-IN PROCEDURE

  1. When returning the laptop, the student must allow at least fifteen minutes for the library staff member or a student worker to check the equipment.
  2. Students must return the laptop to a library staff member or a student worker.  A computer should never be left unattended at the Circulation/Information counter.
  3. A staff member or a student worker will verify that all parts are present and that the computer and accessories are in good working order.
  4. The laptop will be booted up and checked for functionality upon return.
  5. The laptop will then be checked in from the student's library account.

General Information

  • The laptop is the student's responsibility while it is checked out to them. Never leave it unattended.
  • The student will be able to sign in and utilize Microsoft Office.
  • Students must save their work. Do not save files to the device. Documents saved to the hard drive will be deleted when the device is returned. Files should be saved to a cloud drive (We recommend using Google Docs or personal USB storage).

FINES & LIABILITY

  1. A student's privilege to check out a laptop may be removed for one semester if:
    1. the student fails to return loaned equipment by the due time on more than two occasions
    2. or leaves before the check-in procedure is complete
    3. or leaves the returned computer unattended at the circulation desk.
  2. The student is responsible for ensuring that the laptop is in working order and without physical damage when checked out.
  3. Under no circumstances should a student leave the laptop unattended.  Defiance College will not be responsible for a lost or stolen laptop.  Costs associated with lost equipment are billed to Student Accounts. 
  4. It is the student's full responsibility and fiscal liability for all costs associated with damage to the laptop computer or its associated peripheral equipment during the period it is checked out or its replacement costs should it be lost or stolen. Costs associated with damaged equipment are billed to Student Accounts. 

TROUBLESHOOTING PROBLEMS & QUESTIONS

  1. If a student experiences a problem with laptop hardware or applications or has questions. In that case, they should ask the Computer Services staff.

  2. The student will be responsible for any damage to a laptop if they try to troubleshoot problems without consulting Defiance College Computer Services.

DISCLAIMER

  • Defiance College is not responsible for the loss of or damage to a user's files during the loan period due to any viruses that may be transferred to or from a user's equipment. Defiance College is not responsible for any sensitive or confidential information (credit card numbers, etc.) that might be compromised through the device.
  • Any work lost due to the laptop being faulty cannot be recovered. The college is not responsible for any data lost due to any fault on the computer.
  • Students must read and adhere to the Computer/Information Technology policies & guidelines in the DC Student Handbook.
