Mission

The ARC in the Learning Commons supports the educational mission of Defiance College by providing academic services to the colleges’ students. The ARC’s mission is to assist students toward their potential in a hospitable and positive atmosphere where personal growth and academic improvement are nurtured, long-term success is supported, and learning is the priority. Learning is an on-going process, and our goal is to help students develop skills and strategies for overall college success.

Services

Peer Tutoring

ARC in the Learning Commons provides free individual, personal tutoring sessions. Our tutors, who have been recommended by faculty members, have successfully completed a course prior to tutoring, have a strong understanding of the content material, and want to help others succeed. Tutoring is available in all the disciplines across campus.

Structured Study Program

The Structured Study Program or SSP is managed by a partnership between Athletics, the Office of Retention and First Year Experience and the Library and Learning Commons to provide arranged and organized study time for Defiance College students involved in athletics and students in need of academic assistance. SSP sessions promote learning through the use of peer mentors, tutors, and writing consultants as well as study skills workshops. SSP creates an environment where students can get coursework done free of distractions and where students can get the academic assistance they need to improve study skills. Sessions are offered throughout the week and must be scheduled with the SSP Supervisor, Lisa Crumit-Hancock, Learning Commons Manager.

Study Skill Development

Effective study skills are successful strategies for approaching course work and overall learning. The ARC in the Learning Commons recognizes that effective study skills are critical to success in college. These study skills include but are not limited to time management and organization, note-taking, exam taking strategies, etc. The ARC will provide workshops led by the Learning Commons Manager or the graduate assistant for groups of students who have an identified need or will provide private conferences with students who request help in developing effective study strategies for college success.

Supplemental Instruction

SI is a free academic assistance program provided by the ARC in the Learning Commons that uses peer-led group study to help students succeed in traditionally difficult courses. SI group study sessions are facilitated by SI leaders, who are peer students who have previously completed the targeted course and demonstrated competency. The SI sessions allow the leader to facilitate group study strategies and collaborative study techniques specific to a course.

Writing Consultation

ARC in the Learning Commons provides students with free assistance on their papers, projects, and reports from writing consultants who have been recommended by faculty members and successfully completed the writing courses at Defiance College. Writing Consultants provide students with private, individualized help to develop strategies for approaching their assignments through a better understanding of purpose, structure, topic, and audience. Writing Consultants are trained to help writers with any stage of the writing process, but are not merely proofreaders or editors.
