Archival Collections

Defiance College

The Defiance College Archives consists of approximately 225 linear feet of processed materials; 87 linear feet of yet-to-be processed materials; and approximately 48 linear feet of rare books and other special book collections. The special book collection includes permanent record copies of master’s projects completed for the College’s MBA (formerly MBOL), and MA in Education degrees. Examples of rare books owned include the Holgate diaries, kept by an early settler family, an important primary source for Defiance area history. Some of the largest files in the processed areas of the archives include Board of Trustee minutes back to the 1880’s, files of newspaper clippings about the college from the 1940’s to the 1990’s, the Oraculum yearbooks dating back to 1908, the college catalogs from 1890 to the present, and over 9,000 pictures, printed photographs and slides, that are retrievable by subject. Other collections frequently consulted by researchers include alumni magazines and newsletters dating from the 1940’s, church affiliation papers, scrapbooks kept by students and faculty, ranging between the 1880’s and 1960’s, theater/concert/commencement programs; and campus newspapers dating from the 1910’s. Please contact Barb Sedlock for more information or to schedule research time.

Schauffler College

The Schauffler College archival collection consists of approximately 70 linear feet of boxes of unsorted material. There are 13 boxes of student records, which include applications, letters of reference, and other personal information about the students that would be useful to researchers in ethnicity, women’s history, and genealogy. The student body was quite multicultural in an era when diversity in education was a rarity. There are boxes of files on Schauffler faculty and alumni, newsletters, books, and magazines published by the college; trustee and faculty meeting minutes, and artifacts such as commemorative plates and plaques that indicated the donors who funded the various rooms in the original college buildings in Cleveland. There are also hundreds of photographs of students and college events. Please contact Barb Sedlock for more information or to schedule research time.

Note: Approximately 5 linear feet of Schauffler College archival materials are part of the Oberlin College Archives.
