Grizzly Man

About the Documentary

Grizzly Man, directed by Werner Herzog, tells the story of Timothy Treadwell, a wildlife conservationist whose passion for grizzly bears intrigued the general public and often irritated members of the scientific community. Treadwell lived in Alaska's Katmai National Park for 13 summers among a population of over 2,000 grizzly bears. He shot over 100 hours of footage during his time spent living in the park, which Herzog uses to help tell Treadwell's story. The footage shows the beautiful landscape and captures many interactions between Treadwell and wild bears. Treadwell frequently speaks directly to the viewer explaining how dangerous the bears can be and how easily he could be killed if he made the wrong move. Tragically, Treadwell and his girlfriend were killed by a grizzly bear in the park in 2003. Herzog studies Treadwell's footage and speaks with his friends and family to better understand his worldview and the reasoning behind his decision to live with the bears in the wild. Herzog also speaks with bear biologists and other experts who weigh in on Treadwell's actions.
