Identifying Scholarly Articles 

Look at the Journal:

  • Title sounds scholarly, clearly identifies the subject matter, and often includes the word "journal"
  • Few advertisements of images
  • Matte paper with little color

Look at the Article:

  • Typically will be lengthy (over 5 pages)
  • Lists references at the end and cites sources within the text
  • Written by "experts" in the field with considerable knowledge or experience; credentials will likely be listed 
  • Titles clearly identify subject matter
  • Covers specific, narrow topics
  • Images support research purposes
  • Features little or no color
  • Often begins with an abstract and breaks text into subtitled sections (literature review, methods, results/findings, etc.)
  • Written in academic language that may include technical terms or jargon

Identifying Popular Articles

Look at the Newspaper/Magazine:

  • Heavily illustrated with lots of color and glossy paper OR black-and-white newspaper print
  • Has advertisements
  • Uses eye-catching typography and layouts
  • Title is short and attention-grabbing

Look at the Article:

  • Short in length (under 5 pages)
  • No or few references listed at the end
  • Written by journalists; no credentials listed
  • Edited by a panel of editors with no expertise in the subject field
  • Written in informal, easy-to-read language
  • Covers of-interest issues and gives broad overviews of topics
  • Features images for aesthetic purposes
  • Attention-grabbing titles
