Library Instruction: Library Instruction Services

Other Services

Research Guides
These guides focus on the best resources to use to complete research assignments in particular majors at Defiance College.

One-on-One Consultations
Students work closely with a librarian or library staff member to go over an assignment's research needs as well as locate credible and authoritative source material.

Library Instruction Services

Content is flexible and you and the lead librarian  will collaborate on this issue. Typically, sessions focus on specific skills that will benefit your students most. We are happy to do database demonstrations, but our sessions strive to go beyond this level and teach students skills that are transferable from one resource to the next. We also feel that instruction is important for all courses, regardless of academic discipline or grade level. Some content areas that have been covered in past sessions include:

  • Library tour (building tour and/or website "tour")
  • How to develop a Research Plan
  • Types of Sources
  • Researching Using Databases
  • Researching Using the Jacket Search or DC Catalog
  • Using Journal Finder
  • Citation 101
  • Evaluating Information
  • How to Narrow or Broaden your Search
  • Plagiarism and Academic Dishonesty
  • Hands-on Research in the Computer Lab (assisting students in finding scholarly resources for a specific course project)
